Uninvited at 40: The Haunted Mansion That Taught Games to Whisper
The night you crash the car at the mansion
Uninvited opens with an accident. You are driving at night with your brother, something appears on the road, you swerve — and wake up with the car wrecked against a tree. Your brother is gone. The only place he could be is the old mansion looming nearby.
It is a perfect horror premise because it removes every alternative. No car, no phone, no road home. The only direction is forward, through the front door of a house that very clearly does not want you.
How ICOM built dread
- Sparse images. The original Macintosh screens were black and white. A single still picture of a hallway left plenty of room for the imagination to fill the dark corners.
- Written descriptions. Examining things produced prose in a text window, and the words did much of the frightening.
- Ghosts with rules. The mansion once belonged to a sorcerer and his apprentices, and its undead residents punish careless exploration.
- Time pressure. Linger too long and the house itself starts to work against you, so curiosity always has a cost.
Its place next to Moonmist and The Lurking Horror
1986 was also the year of Infocom's Moonmist, a gothic castle mystery with a ghostly White Lady, which we celebrated in 50 years of text adventures. Shortly after, Infocom's The Lurking Horror brought Lovecraftian dread to a university campus, using nothing but text.
Put side by side, they show two answers to the same question. Infocom trusted the sentence completely; ICOM paired sentences with a picture and a mouse. Both understood that a haunted space is scariest when you have to explore it yourself.
What haunted-house design still teaches in 2026
- Trap the player early. A crashed car says "you can't leave" faster than any locked gate.
- Give a personal reason to go in. A missing brother makes every room matter.
- Show less. Restraint — one image, one paragraph — is scarier than spectacle.
- Let the house be a character. The best haunted houses feel like they are watching you back.

Celebrate by playing
Uninvited is still available through a legitimate MacVenture Series re-release, so the anniversary is easy to mark properly. Then, for the typed-command side of the tradition, try PARANOID.
One house in a small American town, one night, and a girlfriend whose story stops adding up. Released in 2025, it plays in your browser and takes about 120 minutes. You type what you do, and the house answers.

Frequently asked questions
What is Uninvited?
Uninvited is a 1986 horror adventure developed by ICOM Simulations and published by Mindscape for the Macintosh. It was part of the MacVenture series alongside Déjà Vu and Shadowgate, and was later ported to other systems including the Amiga, Atari ST, MS-DOS, Apple IIGS, Commodore 64 and NES.
Is Uninvited a text adventure?
Not strictly. Uninvited is a point-and-click graphic adventure: you choose verbs and click objects in a picture instead of typing commands. But much of its atmosphere comes from written descriptions in its text window, which is why it sits so close to the text adventure tradition.
What is the story of Uninvited?
You crash your car on a dark road, wake up to find your brother missing, and head into the nearby mansion to look for him. The house turns out to be haunted — once home to a sorcerer and his apprentices — and full of ghosts and other undead residents.
Can I still play Uninvited in 2026?
Yes. A MacVenture Series re-release containing the original Macintosh and Apple IIGS versions has been sold on Steam since 2015. Look for legitimate re-releases rather than abandonware downloads.
How is PARANOID related to Uninvited?
Both are about one house and one bad night. Unlike Uninvited, PARANOID is a typed-command text adventure: you write what you do and the house answers. It is set in a small American town, was released in 2025, plays in the browser and takes about 120 minutes.
